Provenance: The vendor has kindly provided us with the following information:

This rifle was owned by Major Edward S. Orr Ewing CVO, and was originally owned by the late Charles Lindsay Orr Ewing MP (grandfather of the current owner). Charles Lindsay Orr Ewing was born on 8th September 1860, the fifth son of the late Sir Archibald Orr Ewing MP of Ballikinrain and Elizabeth Lindsey Reid.

He was educated at Harrow where he excelled in athletics winning the Victor Ludorum Trophy. He travelled the Far East especially in Kashmir where he partook in Big Game hunting and visited other Eastern countries including Japan (where he appreciated the Geisha Girls!). He was a member of the Royal Company of Archers as well as joining the Territorial Regiment of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders reaching the rank of Captain.

Charles Lindsay Orr Ewing was elected Member of Parliament for Ayr Boroughs, which seat he retained from 1895 until his death in 1903. To enable him to visit his constituents, many of whom were living on islands, he commissioned G.L. Watson to build him a Y class yacht, which, known as Rainbow won him many races including beating the Kaiser on two occasions, once with the Kaiser aboard Rainbow.

He married in 1898 Lady Augusta Helen Boyle, whose family owned Dunskey. Charles Lindsay Orr Ewing's interests were varied; Apart from his sailing, he was a countryman at heart and did much in the running of the family estate as well as with the family firm of United Turkey Red. He was also a keen horseman to the extent of riding in point to point races as well as hunting to hounds. But stalking and sailing were probably his main interests. Dying at the age of 43, few could have achieved as much as he did in so short a life as that of Charles Lindsay Orr Ewing.
